Makhazi had a big win at the BET Awards when he won Best New International Act.
In an interview before heading to the US to attend the BET Awards, Makhadzi promised her fans that she would bring home any award she was nominated for and the Limpopo girl made good on her promise by winning the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards Viewers' Choice Award: Best New International Act.
“I'm so touched. Thank you all for coming. I've received your blessings. [it] “I believe I am going home,” Makhazi said in an interview with BET TV show Ayanda MVP. Beats & Rhymes.
The BET win came on her 28th birthday, which was on Sunday. “It's the best birthday ever. Because of the time difference, I get to celebrate my birthday twice… I got celebrated in South Africa yesterday and today I'm celebrating in America,” Makhatji declared.
“I'm so happy. I'm a kid who started out in the streets making music and here I am today. My dream has come true. I'm speechless. All I can say is that black kids can be successful,” she continued.
True to her Chivenda culture, Makhazi bowed her head when accepting the award. Kneeling or bending one's knees when receiving something is a sign of respect in her culture.
The 24th annual BET Awards were held on Sunday at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California, and were hosted by American actress Taraji P. Henson.
Makhazi defeated Britain's Bella and Crystalle, French group Holly G, Nigeria's Say Vibes and South Africa's Tyler ICU.

Tyra continues to shine
South Africa's Tyra also picked up big wins at the awards, taking home the awards for Best New Artist and Best International Act.
“Hey guys, I didn't prepare anything but I'm so grateful to my guys, my family and my team. Thank you to BET for always pushing the culture forward. Get ready because I'm going to be performing soon,” Tyra said while accepting the award.
She lost out to Sza in the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist category, but won Best International Artist, beating out amapiano superstars Focalistic and Nigeria's Ira Star.
The BET award follows the Afropop hit's win at the inaugural Grammy Awards earlier this year in the Best African Music Performance category. water.
