The African National Congress (ANC) is due to brief the media on progress in Gauteng unity government negotiations on Wednesday morning.
This follows an explanation by the Democratic Alliance (DA) about the impasse between the two parties.
The ANC and DA won 34 percent and 27 percent of the vote respectively in May's Gauteng provincial elections.
The DA said it was not willing to accede to the ANC's demands regarding the allocation of powers among various government departments in the province. In a report late on Tuesday, the DA said the ANC had offered the DA three of the province's 10 MEC posts.
DA federal council chairperson Helen Zille said: “We will not be co-opted by the ANC solely on their terms. They are acting as if the ANC still has a majority in Gauteng, which it does not. We cannot agree to be held hostage to a provincial unity government where only one party dictates the terms. As far as parliamentary chairpersons are concerned, there was a proposal for the DA to win six seats out of a total of 17 and we were prepared to accept this allocation despite a significant shortfall.”
