Shuduphazo Msida, fondly known as Shudu, is a former Miss South Africa and a prominent mental health advocate who recently made headlines with her spectacular appearance at the Durban 2024 July pageant.
The annual horse racing event is as much about fashion as it is about racing, and Shudu's outfit this year sparked controversy as it did not fit the theme. Riding the Wave.
Shudu has been criticised on social media for not going along with the theme and she took to social media to share her views on the choice of dress.
“Fashion is more than just an art form; it is a language that has shaped and defined periods in human history, offering insight into their stories and conversations.”
“I was so excited to attend my first Durban July wearing an empowering outfit designed by one of my favourite designers, Mzukisi Mbane of IMPRINTZA. To raise awareness for #ForeverWena at one of South Africa's most anticipated social events, I repurposed signage from a #ForeverWena student rally and did a massive HIV awareness drive.”
“My dress represents freedom of choice and autonomy, especially in our interactions. Options are available so we can all make the right choices to protect ourselves and others,” she explains.
