A week after 70-year-old Mabuti Koben's house burned down, the community of Thokoza, Gauteng, rallied together to help rebuild his home during Mandela month.
Kobeng's house caught fire on the night of July 8, 2024 while he was sleeping and he lost all his belongings in the fire.
A few days later, Sifiso Shabalala, a comedian and content creator known as Regan Wayans, posted her own video appealing for help from the public.
“We, the young people, decided to do something and raise awareness about this issue,” Tshabalala said.
“The response so far has been fantastic. Several members of the community have accompanied us to the site to clean the roof and paint the walls,” Tshabalala said. Citizen.
“Several people have made financial donations to help purchase materials and equipment. Businesses have also pledged donations but we are still waiting to hear back.”
Shabalala confirmed that social media philanthropist BI Pakathi also contributed to the fundraising effort.
Actor Lunga Mofokeng also shared a video of Koben's burnt out house, showing items in each room of the house destroyed in the fire.
“Umkuru [ an elderly man in isiZulu] He was asleep and that tells me what happened. [electrical] “There was probably a problem with the wiring and it exploded without us knowing what happened,” Mofokeng said in the video.

“Mukul is fine.”
Koben, who was woken up in the middle of the night by flames, emerged from the house unharmed. “Mukulu was alone when the house burned. He is fine,” Tshabalala said.
With his house burnt and in need of repairs, the elderly man has found temporary accommodation. “Currently, Mukul is taking shelter in a shack in his backyard. He has family members but they are not living with him.”
In one of his latest videos, Tshabalala gives an update on the work being done at the burnt-out house.
“We have not reached our target but Bi Pakathi has invested in the business and we still need more funding. We are grateful for what he has given us. But there is a lot to do,” Shabalala said.
