The Johannesburg Youth Ballet (JYB) and the National School of the Arts (NSA) will be presenting the show at Johannesburg Theatre Lesedi.
After four exciting days of classical ballet and contemporary dance, the 11th South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) came to an emotional close with a winners' gala performance in Cape Town.
The competition took place at the Artscape Opera House from July 14th to 17th.
This year's competition saw 88 dancers divided into three age groups – 9-12 (Scholars), 13-16 (Juniors) and 17-22 (Seniors) – compete in classical and contemporary solos and the recently introduced duet, trio, group and choreography categories.
The majority of participants were South African and came from the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Limpopo and Gauteng provinces.
The dance competition was founded by Dirk Badenhorst in 2008. From 2021 SAIBC will be held annually.

Winner
In the senior category, American ballet dancer Max Berg won the gold medal, while South African Mathis de Beer won the silver medal and fellow countryman Mia Burger won the bronze medal.
Dancers including the aforementioned Isabella Godinho and Annika Scheepers rounded out the top five in the senior division.
In the junior division, for children aged 13 to 16, South African dancers won every medal: Shiloh Godfrey won gold, Mojiza Mosavale won silver and Alix Mackay won bronze.
The jury was chaired by Alexei Moskalenko and Tanya Howard, former principal ballerina with the National Ballet of Canada.
“As the only country on the African continent that is purely focused on classical ballet as its primary sport, and the only competition on the African continent, we are very proud of what we have achieved,” Badenhorst said. Citizen At the start of the competition.
The grand finale featured dance moves by all 88 2024 contestants and was choreographed by Badenhorst.

Collaboration between NSA and Johannesburg Youth Ballet

“This season will feature a wide range of dance, from an adaptation of the Romantic ballet Les Sylphides to Spanish dance by Gillian Bonello, contemporary dance with choreography by Laura Cameron, Yusuf Thomas and Tshepo Zasekhaya, a special interpretation of hip hop by Thaton Nkwe and an all-new Amaballet by South African-born and inspired Bhungane Gabriel Melomakhulu, an exploration of innovative choreography inspired by the Amapiano.”
