Chidinma Ongwe Vanessa Adesina's victory at the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant has sparked controversy on social media.
Chidinma was offered the opportunity to compete a week before the final and accepted, withdrawing from the Miss South Africa pageant.
On Saturday night, the 23-year-old was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 and will represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico.
The model’s win sparked controversy with some Nigerians alleging that organizers were biased and believed other contestants deserved to win.

“I flew her over there to give her the crown. What an interesting country.”
“Some girls auditioned through due process and you gave the crown to someone who didn't even choose to represent you in the first place. Is this your way of telling other girls that they are not good enough? Even when you announced the top five you only played Chidimma's video. What does this mean? What message are you trying to send to young and aspiring girls? Is the crown just for pity?”
“@chichi_vanessa How does it feel to wear another woman's crown? Because deep down you know you don't deserve it.”
“Nigeria has your full support. Let's aim to win in Mexico in November.”
“Chidimma only spent 5 days in Nigeria and was crowned Miss Nigeria beating women who have lived there their whole lives 😂😂🇿🇦 Nigerians have to hurt themselves to be mean to us.”
