Named after the Zulu word for “hero”, the campaign celebrates the profound impact these artists have had in shaping the local music landscape.
Apple Music Amakuhawe The campaign for Heritage Month will feature six exclusive guest-curated playlists from some of the country's most iconic artists.
These playlists celebrate the rich diversity of South African music across genres and decades.
September is Heritage Month in South Africa and 24 September each year is celebrated as Heritage Day.
The initiative includes playlists curated by Afropop icon Ringo Madlingozi, legendary jazz singer Letta Mbulu, Mi Casa's Jay Something, Afrikaans rock star Karen Zoid, hip hop pioneers ThriCoeur and alternative rock legend Francois Van Coke.
The campaign will also feature flagship stores Amakuhawe The playlist showcases some of South Africa’s most acclaimed songs, from icons such as Brenda Fassie, Miriam Makeba and Mandoza, to TKZee, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Sipho “Hotsticks” Mabuse.

The artist reflects on his musical choices
Speaking at the launch at DNA Brand Architects in Fourways on Tuesday, Ringo Madlingozi said he hoped people would enjoy his selection.
“These are some of the songs that speak to the rhythm of my heart. As you listen to these diverse sounds, I hope you can feel the power of music and how it brings us together,” he said.
Jazz veteran Judith Sepma said her playlist reflects the strong female voices that have inspired her throughout her career.
She added: “The best thing about my career is that our country really loves and supports us. Scream, smile and dance was released and we were lucky enough to get some radio play on multiple songs.”
Squatter Kampf founding member ThriKur said his choice of songs reflects the realities and aspirations of the times, disposable resources and sounds born from dreams.
J'Something adds: “Traditions are rooted in stories and beliefs passed down through generations. Music plays a vital role in shaping culture. These are my favourite South African creatives at the moment.”
