Award-winning singer Muthandazo Ghatia celebrates 14 years of sobriety.
The 37-year-old stopped drinking in 2010 at the age of 24 and opened up to Daily Sun about how and the process.
“I felt drinking was a pattern that needed to be broken for me because there were many people in my family who had lost everything because of alcohol. That included my father.” When I was in the ninth grade, “I was already drinking heavily, because there was a tavern at home and there was alcohol everywhere,” he told the publication.
“My family didn't know that I was a heavy drinker. At that time, I looked at myself and felt like where to start, was alcohol abuse going to determine my future? Breaking the curse. It was necessary.”
of Senzeni The hitmaker said he has never been thirsty for alcohol since quitting alcohol.
“When I decided to quit, nothing bad was happening. It was a conscious decision and I was ready to get over it. When I told my friends, they thought I was joking. I was also trying to prove to them that I could stop, and it wasn't that hard because it helped me too.
“Given the industry I'm in now, I think it would have ruined my career and me as a person. I don't think I'd be here, no one would take me seriously. There wouldn’t have been,” he said.
“It looks different for everyone. But what I can say is that alcohol cannot be a source of happiness. That's where it's wrong,” he said.
