The hung Thabazimbi local government is preparing to hold its first city council meeting to elect officials on Thursday.
The day after the by-election, the Constitutional Court upheld the legitimacy of the Democratic Alliance-led coalition government in the dissolved council. However, due to the by-election, the parliament was once again brought to a standstill.
Limpopo Cooperative Governance MEC Basikopo Makam said the meeting would proceed as planned.
“We are ready to hold a meeting on Thursday the 12th, but we were thinking about Wednesday, but unfortunately magistrates and IEC staff will not necessarily be able to attend, and as a result, the Thabazimbi District The first meeting of the municipality will be convened on Thursday.”
The Electoral Commission said it is ready to facilitate the holding of the first parliament, where the Mayor's Council will be elected.
“The IEC has been asked to assist in the first item on the agenda, the selection of the Chair of the Council, who, once elected, will take over the management of the agenda. We will also be there to assist in the election of the MP representing Sabazimbi in the Waterberg district,” said provincial election officer Nkalo Mateta.
