The African National Congress (ANC) regional executive committee for the Waterberg region in Limpopo has recommended the removal of Aaron Mokhetle as mayor of Lephalale.
This comes after a video circulated in which Mr Mokhetle expressed his dissatisfaction with working with local chiefs and said he wanted to work only with them.
Waterberg ANC spokesperson Seraka Mapeka said the regional executive committee had submitted a report containing recommendations to the party's state leadership.
Mr Mapeka said: “The team has come back with a report that recommends that the mayor must be relieved of his responsibilities as mayor.''The report states that as an African National Congress, expatriates will work with the chiefs, but… The Mayor was found to be at fault because we will not allow a situation where he chooses not to work with the Mayors. I look forward to it.”
Fransina Shongoane, a Lephalale traditional leader, says the Mokgetlu do not have good relationships with the local community.
Shongoane says: “The mayor of Lephalale undermines us. He doesn’t want to talk to us, he doesn’t want to work with us, he said he won’t work with the Indunas as chiefs. We want him removed, he undermines us while the chiefs work with the whole community.”
