President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to announce the results of discussions by the Government of National Unity (GNU) Clearinghouse on the Basic Education Law Amendment Act (BELA). This was revealed by Vice President Paul Mashatil in his address to the SACP's 5th Special National Conference in Boksburg, Johannesburg on Friday.
In October, the GNU Clearinghouse Mechanism agreed to establish a small team to address some of the concerns raised about the law.
The team was made up of Deputy Minister Andries Nel, Cornelius Mulder of the Freedom Front Plus, Brett Herron of the GOOD Party, Helen Zille of the Democratic Alliance, and African National Congress leader Mdumiseni Ntuli.
Mr Mashatile said he submitted the report to the president last night and it would be published soon.
“The President said to the people of GNU that there are people among you who are dissatisfied and I am going to set up a structure to look into those issues. The President asked me to chair the meeting. We finished our BELA work yesterday. So last night I went to report to the President, and here is the report. So, the President has the report and will announce what conclusions we have reached. And I said this is what we're going to propose going forward. So the announcement will be soon. It will be held at BELA.
