The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party says it will not poach members from other political parties, despite public and political sentiment regarding the recruitment process.
Dr John Hlophe, Deputy Leader of the MK Party, said:
Mr Hlofe was speaking today at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium ahead of the party's first anniversary celebrations.
Thousands of supporters from all over the country have gathered at the stadium.
Hlofe says new members are attracted to the party's policies.
“We are not in the business of stealing members from other parties, and we will not poach them. People are attracted to us and like our policies, so we are not going to drive them away. . Even Comrade Floyd Shivambu of SG came to us and joined our party without being heard. We are not in the business of destroying other parties. There is nothing that benefits us. But there are good reasons for us to work in harmony with other parties.
Hlofe said the party would not engage in any sideshow caused by public statements made by the Economic Freedom Fighters leadership. This comes after former EFF officials, including former vice-president Floyd Shivambu, defected to the MK party. He said the two parties work well together in Congress.
“In Parliament, we are leaders of the Progressive Caucus and we are doing a reasonably good job. Outside Parliament, there have been quite a few statements by the EFF leadership and prominent members within the EFF. Such comments are not constructive. We have decided to ignore them and focus on the political task of liberating the African masses in this country. No,” Hlofe added.
