Newcastle qualified for the FA Cup fifth round with a narrow victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Sean Longstaff's controversial first-half goal put the visitors ahead, with the midfielder firing a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner after the ball deflected off the arm of teammate Bruno Guimarães.
The organizers were outraged by the decision, with several home players complaining to referee Jared Gillett before the goal was confirmed by a video assistant referee check.
Dan Byrne cut Newcastle's lead to 2 with a close-range shot against his former employers just after the hour mark, when home goalkeeper Marek Rodak could only parry Sven Botman's header. I doubled it.
At that point, Fulham looked likely to equalize against Newcastle, who looked unconvincing and exhausted.
Marco Silva's much-changed side were more fluent throughout, but lacked sharpness in the final third, despite primarily dominating the ball.
Rodrigo Muñiz's early shot was one of the best moments, with a good save from Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, but substitute Raul Jimenez turned in Kenny Tete's cross from the right and scored from close range. I couldn't match it.
The draw for the next round of the competition will take place on Sunday.
Fulham sent off from two cup games in the same week
Silva started against Liverpool in Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final, making seven changes.
There was little to complain about in their overall performance, but their hopes of reaching this season's Wembley final were once again dashed, with a lack of strength evident at both ends of the pitch.
Muñiz, 22, started in place of Jimenez and was often isolated as the hosts struggled to break down their opponents, with just one shot on target.
And while Tete's incredible run from right-back appeared to be their best source of inspiration, it was too late to introduce Jimenez and João Parinha.
Silva will also be disappointed by Harry Wilson's injury in the first half and the way his team conceded, with two of Newcastle's goals coming from corners and Botman firing the second completely free.
Newcastle strive for victory
Meanwhile, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe will be delighted with their progress in a competition they have not won since 1955.
The visiting team has been in a difficult situation, having lost their last seven games in the FA Cup against top-flight opponents, and lost their last four games in the Premier League.
With Miguel Almiron sidelined with illness, his replacement Jacob Murphy should have done better with the early chances given to him by Bobby de Cordova-Reid and Anthony Robinson.
He was also well offside when he grabbed a through ball and sent the ball past Rodak and into the far corner.
However, Longstaff's goal kept them going and Byrne's goal secured victory.
