Eskom has increased Transmission capacity available for new wind power projects in southern South Africa.
Outlined in the 2025 Generating Connected Capacity Assessment (GCCA) addendum, the additional capacity was obtained by “reducing” previously approved projects within “reasonable” limits, the report said. The book said.
“Some of the transmission grids in the regions most favorable to wind power, such as the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape, have had all their capacity used up by previous tendering periods and private purchasers. There is no capacity in some parts of the country,” Segomoko said. Eskom Transmission Group group executive Mr Scheppers said in a statement on Sunday.
“By accepting a reasonable proportion of curtailment of 10% or less, 3,470MW of additional generation capacity can be connected to the grid almost immediately, two of which are 2,680MW in the Western Cape and 2,680MW in the Eastern In the Cape it is 790MW,” Scheppers said.
Eskom defines curtailment as “controlling and reducing the output of renewable energy power plants in response to transmission capacity constraints.”

By their own admission, restraint is a viable workaround to the constraint problem, but it is not a complete solution. Eskom said this would require significant grid investment and would take several years to develop and build. – © 2024 News Central Media
