Vishen Harambage fell early to an attacking shot in the first over, but Prindu Perera and Sines Jayawardena narrowly came forward to run the ball. However, Sri Lankan captain Sines lobbed Nathan Edward near midwicket for six points, but was grabbed by Raneiko Smith and fell again early on.
Dinura Kalpahana, who was in good form, joined Spun Waduge at the wicket. Some erratic work by the West Indies bowlers saw Sri Lanka add some quick scores. Waduge led the run-scoring and helped Sri Lanka approach 100 points. However, the batsman was unlucky to be dismissed in the 19th over when Kalpahana hit one straight back to Nathan Seeley and the bowler managed to get a hand. before the ball hits the stumps. Waduge was out of the crease and was ruled a run-out. Sharjan Shanmuganathan and Kalpahana held their fort together till the middle of the innings.
In the final over of the powerplay, Raneiko smashed the ball in to remove the set pudding and West Indies took control. Sri Lanka lost two more men soon after. Tarique Edward had Shanmuganathan caught at first slip in the 26th over and Ravishan de Silva hit a full toss straight back to Raneiko in the 31st over. Kalpahana once again became the anchor of Sri Lanka's efforts. Along with Marushya Talpati, he put together an important late-wicket stand. He scored his third 50th point of the tournament while in the stands.
However, Kalpahana was unable to continue running to the end and fell while trying to cut Sealy. However, Tulpati continued to fight for the Lankans. Taking a loose shot, he scored at a fast pace and helped Sri Lanka approach 200 points. His 42 out of 38 points helped Sri Lanka finish with 231 points.
Sri Lanka and West Indies, hurt by their group stage defeats, will be well aware of the things they need to correct. So far, both teams have been counting on special performances from individual players such as Dinura Kalpahana and Jewel Andreu. Both teams will be hoping for an improved team performance in their first Super 6 match.
