Previously, this effort relied solely on Vumacam technology and cameras.
This collaboration, supported by infrastructure and technology, strengthens Safe Cities' core principles of community, collective responsibility, and the ability to foster a safer environment for all communities, regardless of their socio-economic background.
The Alliance supports the Safe Cities Initiative and will immediately strengthen concerted efforts to tackle crime in South Africa.
Vumacam and NAVIC will combine their technology and extensive networks to more effectively fight crime. As a collaborative venture, Vumacam and NAVIC will jointly work to expand the SafeCity initiative while maintaining autonomy in the services they provide to their customers. This will strengthen the initiative's support for private and public law enforcement agencies to ensure the lives and livelihoods of communities across South Africa are protected.
The power of Automatic License Plate Recognition (ANPR or LPR) technology has been a game-changer in both NAVIC and Vumacam operations. According to Vumacam's network statistics, an astonishing 80% of successful arrests or intercepts involve his vehicle of interest (VOI) in connection with a variety of crimes, from fraud and theft to more serious crimes such as murder and aggravated assault. This is because the ANPR camera flagged it. Similarly, NAVIC's ANPR network and cloud platform have had a significant impact on clearance rates, demonstrating the effectiveness of technology in crime prevention and detection.
Vumacam’s successful track record in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Mogale City complements NAVIC’s strong ANPR and related tools and operational experience in both large and small metros, as well as bespoke services for rural areas across the country.
Building on this success, Vumacam recently expanded its Safe City initiative to Tshwane, with the aim of offering a more comprehensive service.
CEO Ricky Croock said: “We look forward to leveraging the proven effectiveness of Vumacam’s infrastructure and NAVIC’s advanced tools to make the same impactful contributions in Tshwane that we have seen in other regions. This expansion further strengthens our commitment to enhancing safety and security and broadens our reach to benefit more communities and stakeholders across the country.
“Working with NAVIC brings an additional level of expertise and network expansion to the SafeCity initiative. The combination of our key capabilities and the team's expertise will help support private and public law enforcement agencies. and our ability to deliver solutions that make a real difference in curbing crime.”
The company also has a history of successfully working with security companies, local authorities, neighborhood watch organizations and community groups across South Africa.
Jason Berry, CEO of NAVIC, added: “This partnership is testament to the philosophy that the fight against crime in South Africa is more effective when key players work together. The foundations are being laid for further cooperation between the two companies, benefiting multiple market sectors.”
