Old-age subsidy recipients know better than other vulnerable citizens how difficult it will be to make ends meet at the end of January Worries. The South African Social Security Agency is responsible for administering grants to vulnerable South Africans, such as elderly grant recipients. The Elderly Grant, as it is known, accounts for the largest government subsidy payment after Social Distress Relief (SRD).
February 2024 Old Age Grant Recipients
According to the SA Government website, online applications for the SASSA Older Persons Grant will not be affected. You or a loved one with a signed permission must report directly to your SASSA branch. Click the link here to find your nearest branch in South Africa.

What you need for application
If you are newly receiving old age pension from February 2024, please be sure to bring the following:
- A 13-digit barcoded identification card (ID).
- Proof of marital status.
- Proof of residence (utility bill with your name on it).
- Documents proving income and/or dividends.
- Information about all your assets, including the value of real estate you own.
- Returns for any private pensions you may receive (if applicable).
- Three months' worth of statements certified by your bank.
- Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) member's 'Blue Book' or termination letter from previous employer.
- If you were married and your spouse passed away within the past five years, a copy of your will and a copy of your first and last liquidation and distribution accounts.

External support
The good news is that if you are too old or ill to travel, a loved one can apply on your behalf. All we need is a letter from you or your doctor explaining why you can't visit the office. All of the above documents must be certified by the Oath Commissioner. All applications must then be completed by a SASSA representative.

income declaration
Recipients of old age benefits must ensure that they remain eligible for monthly benefits. Therefore, if you are single, your monthly income should not exceed R8,070 (R96,840 per year). If you are married, your total income cannot exceed R16 140 per month (R193 680 per year).

According to the agency, income includes the following:
- If you receive money from a private pension.
- Money earned from any business or job.
- Financial support from friends and relatives (reflected on bank statements).
- Earn income by renting out your home or part of the real estate you own.
- Child support.
- Salary from a regular job.
- Compensation from other government agencies such as UIF, RAF, COIDA.

Asset threshold
Similarly, the limits for asset declaration are as follows:
- Singles, R1 372 800 or less.
- Married persons, below R2 745 600.
These include:
- Money in your or your spouse's bank account.
- The value of real estate and/or land owned by you and/or your spouse.
- The value of all investments owned by you and/or your spouse.
- The balance of debt in the form of bonds and loans.
