James Ward-Prowse's late penalty spared Kalvin Phillips a blush and saved West Ham a point in the Premier League against Bournemouth at the London Stadium.
new Hammers sign Phillips It was an unforgettable debut as he passed the ball straight to Dominic Solanke to put Bournemouth ahead within three minutes.
However, West Ham were given a chance to get back into the game in the 61st minute when Lloyd Kelly caught Mohamed Kudus inside the penalty area and Ward Prowse fired a spot-kick straight into the middle.
On a cold night in the capital, neither team could find a winner.
“We weren't particularly good on the ball and we didn't pass well,” West Ham manager David Moyes said on the BBC's Match of the Day.
“Either way, we got something out of this game, so we’ll take advantage of that and hopefully improve.”
The Hammers, without a win in their last four games, remain sixth in the Premier League, while Bournemouth move eight points clear of the relegation zone in 12th place.
Phillips makes an unusual start at the London Stadium
Manchester City loanee Phillips has struggled for game time since joining Pep Guardiola's City from Leeds. July 2022 for £45m.
On Friday night, he made his third start in the Premier League in the past two seasons and took only his second touch in a West Ham shirt when he slotted Kurt Zouma's poor pass straight into his opponent Solanke. Solanke finished from close range.
West Ham had a poor first half and were booed at half-time, but Jarrod Bowen came close to scoring with a sharp header that tested Bournemouth keeper Pedro Neto.
West Ham's equalizer came after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) instructed referee Tim Robinson to look at the pitchside monitor, and the referee overturned his decision to award no penalty.
Ward-Prowse equalized, but the hosts were unable to create any further chances and were booed by a small number of supporters at full-time.
The Hammers are currently without a win in their opening five games of the calendar year for the first time since 2010, but remain in Europe in the Premier League table.
As for Phillips, he improved after the break and came on as a substitute, replacing Danny Ings in the 68th minute to a warm reception.
Teammate Kudus told Premier League Productions: “I know what kind of player Phillips is and what qualities he has. “When you come to a different team or system, it takes time to get used to everything.
“I have a lot of faith in him and I have no doubts. He will be even better in the next game.”
Bournemouth will regret the missed opportunity
Bournemouth created chances at will in the first period and it will be a shame not to leave London with all three points.
After the match, manager Andoni Iraola told BBC's Match of the Day: “If anyone had to win today, I think it was Bournemouth.”
West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola was forced to make two excellent saves after two shots from Antoine Semenho and Marcus Tavernier were tipped over by Solanke.
Marcos Senesi's volley also went over the bar and Semenho's shot was tipped over by Areola just before half-time.
The Cherries had a good chance after West Ham equalized, with Kelly saving a shot from an angle and Ryan Christie dragging his shot wide.
“We had the clearest chance,” Iraola added. “We probably weren't clinical enough to score the second goal and take a 2-0 lead and win the game.
“Okay, we only got one point today but we have to cherish it. We were closer to three points than we were to lose. We have to keep pushing.”
Bournemouth enjoyed success in the FA Cup in January but are still waiting for their first Premier League win since December 26.
Getafe striker Enes Unal also had a busy deadline day. joined on loanMeanwhile, Owen Bevan and Kieffer Moore also left the club on loan.
