A first-year student died in Gauteng on Tuesday after allegedly eating snacks from a spaza restaurant.
Emergency services arrived at Mandletu Primary School in Tsakane just before 11am and the student was pronounced dead.
Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the girl's parents claimed the girl ate biscuits from a spaza shop.
Education MEC Matome Chiloane said: “We are deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. We ask parents to be careful about the edible products their children consume.”
“We call on law enforcement and local governments to be more stringent about compliance matters related to spaza shop products.”

Several similar incidents were reported in Gauteng last year.
News24 reported that the students allegedly died after eating snacks and food items sold at spaza stores and taxi ranks. Participants included Grade 3 students from Ongopotse He Tiro Primary School in Roodepoort, as well as Neokan and Leonjere from Soweto.
In the Eastern Cape, more than 60 students at Zinkuka Primary School in Kuonse fell ill after suffering from suspected food poisoning. In Komani, more than 140 students were hospitalized after allegedly eating expired snacks from a spaza shop.
