The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation expressed optimism that the Government of National Unity (GNU) proposed by the African National Congress (ANC) would lead to political stability in the country.
Talks to form a seventh government based on the proposal continued this weekend, with some parties voicing their support for it, while others have rejected it.
The foundation's executive director, Neeshan Barton, said the results of last week's election showed South African voters want their preferred parties to work together to govern the country.
“To form a government you need several people coming together. I think what the ANC chairperson's statement is calling for is also this motion put forward by former president Thabo Mbeki called an inclusive national dialogue where organisations and institutions other than political parties are involved in the process not just up to the formation of a government of national unity but beyond. This is a different concept that needs to be spelled out and understood. My sense is that the issues are very serious and the answers will not come solely from political parties,” Barton said.

Meanwhile, independent candidate Anele Muda called on the ANC to consult with South Africans about its proposals.
Mda was addressing the media in Johannesburg.
Mda said: “If this is honest and he really cares about South Africans, then President Ramaphosa, the current president, should invite South Africans to help him define the principles on which a government of national unity should be built. Then we will see that this is not just a political ploy by political parties to position themselves. Some political parties have declared themselves the ministries they will head. How selfish can they be?”
