Democratic Alliance (DA) Western Cape leader Alan Winde has been re-elected as Premier and will be formally sworn in after Western Cape MPs voted on Thursday.
This is the first meeting of the Western Cape Provincial Assembly's seventh term government.
Winde received 26 votes, compared with 14 for his fellow contestant from the African National Congress (ANC), Mohammed Khalid Said.
Two of the ballots were rejected.
The DA also won 24 seats in the 42-seat parliament, followed by the ANC with eight, the Patriotic Alliance with three and the Economic Freedom Fighters with two.
The other five parties won one seat each.
Winde described his re-election as humbling.
“It's truly an honor and a privilege to have received the majority vote in this chamber, and I'd like to thank all my fellow members. I don't take this lightly. It's a privilege, but it's also an honor to take on this position for another term representing the residents of this state,” he said.
Meanwhile, local councillor Daylin Mitchell was elected chairman.
He won 26 votes, beating the ANC's Ayanda Vance, who received 12. Three votes were invalid and one MP was absent.
