Political analyst Professor Lesiba Thefo has warned against the notion that the Government of National Unity (GNU) will fail because the ANC will work with the DA.
Tefo says GNU-affiliated parties must work together in the interest of the country, but there is speculation that the DA, previously the official opposition, will no longer hold the ANC accountable.
President Ramaphosa will take office after being sworn in as per the constitution and is expected to announce a cabinet that will offer a compromise to DA lawmakers.
Tefo said despite the challenges, the parties involved must remain willing to work together.
“Let us never assume that because it is a Government of National Unity (GNU) there will not be rocky and bumpy roads along the highway. There will be. But democracy thrives mainly because there is a strong opposition. There is very strong anti-DA sentiment that the DA cannot work because it is perceived as white and I am against that. If the DA wants to work, it will make it work and all the people there will make it work if they want it to work. There will be compromises, there will be difficulties here and there but it is in the interest of the nation. Let them feel they can work together.”

Furthermore, IFP leader Berenkosini Hlabisa said the Government of National Unity was an inclusive process.
He said he hoped President Cyril Ramaphosa would use this opportunity to draw up a roadmap for the country and form a stable government.
“I look forward to a cabinet that is inclusive in terms of GNU parties, skills, brains and the capabilities of our country. South Africa needs to move forward and it has to happen soon. I am confident that it will not take long for the President to form a government.”
