Former African National Congress (ANC) treasurer-general Dr Matthews Phosa said the ANC risked further defeats in the 2026 local government elections if it formed a coalition with the Democratic Alliance (DA).
For the first time in 30 years, the ANC failed to secure the majority needed to form a government.
Phosa said the deal with the DA would only satisfy businesses while putting the public at risk.
He presented several scenarios to consider.
“These parties need each other to elect a president straight away and they all have to vote to support that president and speaker. If you ask me what my favourite options are for the ANC, it's the IFP and the EFF or the former Liberation Movement, who are candidates. I don't think the ANC should rely mainly on the DA. I'm against that.”
