eThekwini's African National Congress (ANC) has dismissed Democratic Alliance (DA) claims and hinted that the municipality will fund next week's Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ANC rally.
Both parties plan to hold manifesto rallies in preparation for the 2024 general election.
In response, ANC eThekwini spokesperson Mlondi Mkhize dismissed the claims: “The ANC manifesto rally in eThekwini is not an eThekwini manifesto rally, nor is it a KwaZulu-Natal-sponsored rally.” The meeting will be hosted by our headquarters. We are simply there to host the gathering. Therefore, if there is any insinuation, understanding or assumption that the manifesto rally, the Mayilome rally of the African National Congress, will be funded by his eThekwini region, it is misplaced. This is a national event and the state will control the gathering at the resource level. ”
The ANC is demanding that the DA provide evidence to support its claims.
vote of no confidence
Amid these developments, eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda survived a vote of no confidence initiated by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the DA.
IFP accused ANC member Kaunda of mismanaging the municipality's finances. The EFF, which is an ally of the state's ANC and is a member of the mayor's committee, also voted against Kaunda.
IFP Director-General Mdhu Nkosi has expressed concern. “Since 2019, when Mayor Kaunda joined the council, eThekwini has had irregular expenditures of over R2 billion. We can't just sit back because things are falling apart. The EFF voted against the ANC, but in reality they voted against our motion. The ANC had the support of smaller parties. Some of the smaller parties, I don't think the leaders understand what they're doing.”
