Former ANC president Thabo Mbeki says the ruling party has a duty to itself and South Africans to renew itself. Mr Mbeki was speaking at the ANC's election campaign ground in the Moses Mabhida region of KwaZulu-Natal today.
Mbeki says the most important thing is to renew the party.
“I said to the ANC leadership that we really have to do this. It's not an obligation we owe to the party, it's an obligation we owe to the people. We owe it to the ANC itself. We cannot do the wrong thing and betray the ANC. I have spoken to the leaders and they know what I think.
“I have maintained that the issue of renewal of the ANC is important in order to make it what I am talking about. And the ANC leadership has not told me to shut up. They said we have to do this, and they said, 'Please, campaign.'
Mr Mbeki also said the ruling party must fulfill its promises to South Africans.
His comments came amid service delivery challenges in the region, including water cuts, crime and load reduction.
“So we have to help people regain that confidence. So if we say we're going to solve the water problem, let's solve it. If we're going to solve the energy problem, let's solve it. I mean, this equipment, This ANC must be that kind of device, and it's up to people like me, who are now older and no longer looking for a position, to make sure it lives up to its image. Otherwise, the problem will not be solved.”
