The ANC in the North West is expected to recall some of its municipal secondments soon as the party is assessing the performance of all its municipal secondments in the province.
The party has been meeting with members across the region over the past two weeks, and some mayors and council presidents may be dismissed.
The state's ruling party is concerned about the current state of the municipality and poor service delivery and is currently evaluating the performance of the deployed staff.
According to the party, those who do not deliver will be fired.
“By 2026, we want to have a workforce that is ready to serve the people. We will weed out those we think are not delivering. We will make changes where necessary. Once we have completed our assessment today, we will have an extended PEC meeting in two weeks time and we will provide a consolidated report to the PEC outlining what is going to happen in all these municipalities, along with interventions. I can assure you that no municipality will be left untouched,” says ANC NW spokesperson Tumelo Malping.
The party issued a stern warning to anyone who may resist being removed from office.
“When you take up a position that the ANC has placed you in, you are taking up that position on behalf of the ANC. It is not your position. When we want to remove you and demote you, we should not negotiate with you because we do not negotiate with you when we place you. So we do not expect that to happen. But if anyone tries to do that, we will take a very strong stance against them,” Malping added.
Meanwhile, political analyst Professor André Duvenhage says the intervention is necessary.
“We need strong decision-making. We need strong provincial government intervention and maybe we need to change people's positions. This is a very positive trend. I see this as part of change. Since Nono Maloyi became ANC leader in the North West, there has been a systematic expansion of influence. In my view, they can take the right decisions. We can change the province and improve local government and local governance,” Duvenhage says.
The ANC plans to announce several changes in the municipality within the next two weeks.
