With about 42% of the national vote counted, the African National Congress (ANC) remains in the lead with 42.6%, followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) on about 24% and former president Jacob Zuma's Umkhonto weSizwe party on about 10%.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) was not far behind, winning 9.4% of the vote nationwide.
Counting has been completed in 9,314 of the 23,293 polling precincts.
Approximately 5.2 million votes have been counted so far.
Nationwide, the ANC received more than 2.2 million votes, the DA just over 1.2 million and the MK Party just over 500,000.
HOPE4SA, a four-month-old political party, has already surprised many by garnering over 11,000 votes nationwide.
According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), more than 70,200 votes have so far been declared invalid.

Limpopo province received 96,000 applications for special votes.
Joyce Langolo and Valerie Mbulaheni say they are disappointed that they were unable to exercise their democratic right to vote.
“It didn't make sense. I was expecting people to come to vote, but no one came to visit. It didn't make sense to me as a citizen. I was planning to vote. I was there to register for the special vote.”
“They said they would come so I could vote, but they never came during the special voting period.”
