African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the ruling party was open to negotiations with all parties after failing to win a majority in the general election.
The ANC is set to lose its parliamentary majority for the first time since coming to power 30 years ago.
The South African Electoral Commission (IEC) will this evening announce the results of the 2024 national and provincial elections.
Speaking to media at the National Results Centre in Midrand, Mbalula said the ruling party was aware that the party's popularity was declining.
He said he was tasked with negotiating with political parties.
“We are talking to everyone. We are being approached by political parties, it's normal and the results are clear. No one has got a majority so we will talk to everyone.”
Mbabulula added: “Please don't distort the facts by saying we are in discussions with the DA, MK and the EFF. We are in discussions with everyone because we did not get a majority in the elections. Those who do not want to talk have no choice but to continue to talk. We will have an NEC meeting on Tuesday and will make an announcement about our discussions.”
Statement regarding the results of the 2024 election:
We call on all South Africans to resist efforts by forces to undermine our democracy, undermine our electoral processes and ignore the will of the people.
