African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said that after nearly three months of intense election campaigning across the country, the party ran a clean and good election campaign befitting the ruling party.
He spoke to the SABC on the sidelines of his final voting campaign in Soweto early Wednesday. Mr Mbalula was accompanied by Gauteng ANC provincial chairman Panyaza Lesufi.
The ANC campaigned on the streets of Soweto, the country's largest town. The ANC is leaving nothing to chance and is once again encouraging residents to get out and vote for the party.
Mbalula and Lesufi travel around town to raise support.
On the sidelines of his campaign, Mr Mbalula said the party had done everything in its power to give the ANC another chance to continue in power.
Mbalula said the ANC had been running a good campaign over the past three months. He says the party's work will not end with election campaigns, but will step up efforts to change the lives of South Africans. One of its priorities is high unemployment.
“We believe we have put forward leadership to speak to the people,” Mbalula added.
The party leadership was welcomed by some. Among them is Mmamonagela Sebogidi, 99, who says the ANC has done a lot for the people of South Africa.
“Some people are just impressed by empty messages from others. For me, since the ANC came to power, I think it has achieved a lot and it is working for people. But only here and there.”
Oumaki Bakunyo feels the same way. “I don't think they should be the only ones to judge the ANC. They also need to get out of their comfort zone and go see what the ANC has done.”
On Saturday, the ANC will hold its final Siyanqoba rally at the FNB Stadium, hoping to cement its message in the hearts and minds of voters ahead of next week's polls.
