The joint FAO and WHO World Food Safety Day 2024 campaign was launched today, with this year's theme revealed: Food Safety – Be prepared for the unexpected.
This campaign looks at the issues surrounding unforeseen food safety incidents that can occur even when we are all doing our part to keep food safe. Such incidents can be as simple as a power outage in your home, which then makes it difficult to store food safely. On the other hand, international food safety warnings include contamination or potential contamination within the food supply, the source of which must be identified as soon as possible to avoid disease outbreaks. In such situations, data collection and rapid information exchange across borders and sectors can help prevent the spread of foodborne illness.
This year's World Food Safety Day campaign challenges participants to learn how to be better prepared for such unexpected food safety events.
Corinna Hawkes, FAO's Director of Agriculture, Food Systems and Food Safety, also said in a video message, alongside Francesco Branca, WHO's Director of Nutrition and Food Safety.
“By predicting possible events such as natural disasters such as floods, volcanic eruptions, and power outages, we can ensure that risks to food safety are minimized. And at home, consumer food safety Knowledge of this can help you avoid problems in unexpected situations.
This year on World Food Safety Day, we will raise awareness about: you – No matter your role, be prepared for the unexpected. ”
