The African People's Movement (APEMO) calls for people of all ages to be employed in government positions, and the party says there should be no age limit. Government positions are mainly filled by people under the age of 35.
APEMO president Wikijita Mlotswa outlined the party's roadmap in Bergville, in the Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal. APEMO, a splinter faction of the National Freedom Party (NFP), has joined forces with the National Freedom Party (NFP) and the African National Congress (ANC) to take control of the Ocalamba regional council.
The party is contesting elections at the state and national levels.
Local residents lament the lack of basic services such as water, roads and electricity.
“We are desperately looking for suitable roads and bridges. I also don't have a home.”
“We don't have water or electricity. We need jobs. We hope our vote will make a big difference in the development of this region. We will continue where Mlotswa left off. I hope you do.”
APEMO Chairman Mlotswa said the board recognized the dire need to provide employment to people of all ages.
“People between the ages of 18 and 59 must be employed by the government, so as the City of Oharamba we received a conditional grant from central government to employ people between the ages of 18 and 35 for a period of 36 years. If we hire people, it will be a waste of money.''As an APEMO-led municipality, we have worked to ensure that this grant is funded for a period of 36 to 59 years.'' states.
Mr Mlotswa said the party supported calls to subsidize the taxi industry to make taxi fares more affordable for the poor. And only low-skilled foreigners should be allowed to enter South Africa for work purposes.
