Bayer Leverkusen became German champions for the first time in their 120-year history.
Xabi Alonso's side defeated Werder Bremen 5-0 in front of jubilant supporters to seal the title with five games remaining.
Delighted fans flooded the pitch to celebrate after Leverkusen increased to 79 points, 16 more than nearest rivals Bayern Munich and 15 points remaining.
This is a remarkable achievement by former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Alonso, who took over as manager in October 2022 with the club in the bottom two.
Leverkusen's victory ended Bayern's dominance of the league, which had won 11 straight titles.
BBC Sport looks at some of the statistics behind their impressive win.
“It's completely unbelievable.”
Bayern Munich has dominated German soccer, and the last team other than Bayern to win the Bundesliga in recent years was Borussia Dortmund in 2012.
All that has changed now that Leverkusen remained unbeaten all season and won the title, despite juggling Europa League and German Cup qualification.
Alonso's side have dropped just eight points, winning 25 of their 29 games and drawing the remaining four.
Furthermore, they 2-0 lead over West Ham in the first leg They will play in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, and will face Kaiserslautern of the second division in the German Cup final on May 25th.
Their unbeaten record stands at 43 games in all competitions, and if they can maintain this for the rest of the season they will break the record set by Benfica in the 1960s.
This season, Leverkusen have played 43 games in all competitions, winning 38 and drawing five, scoring 123 times and conceding only 31 times.
Their last loss was on May 27, 2023.
With Sunday's win against Werder Bremen, Leverkusen established the longest unbeaten start to a season in the Bundesliga.
The previous record was 28 appearances for Bayern in the 2013-14 season, Josep Guardiola's first stint as manager.
“To go unbeaten in the Bundesliga and end Bayern Munich's long reign is truly incredible,” broadcaster David Keppel, a Leverkusen fan, told BBC World Service Sport. Ta.
The fans are in a really happy space.
“No more Neverkusen tags”
In the 2001-02 season, Bayer Leverkusen were chasing the treble of the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League.
In the league match, they ended up scoreless, one point behind champions Borussia Dortmund, lost 2-1 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final, and lost 4-2 to Schalke in the German Cup final.
This campaign gave rise to the 'Neverkusen' tag, which the club has struggled to shake off.
“The pain of 2002 really runs deep,” Keppel added. “It really hurt that we were so close to winning the Treble and not winning any trophies.”
Leverkusen have finished runners-up in the Bundesliga five times, but by winning the Bundesliga title they have certainly shaken off the 'Neverkusen' tag for good.
Sunday's success was their first trophy since 1993, when they defeated Hertha Berlin 1-0 to win the German Cup.
“Eviva España”
Granit Xhaka scored Leverkusen's second goal against Werder Bremen.
It was his second Bundesliga goal since signing from Arsenal for £21.4m last summer, but the Swiss midfielder's experience proved crucial in his quest for honours.
On Sunday, Nigerian striker Victor Boniface scored his 11th league goal of the season, while German forward Florian Wirtz came on as a substitute to score a hat-trick in the second half.
Wirtz becomes the first player to score a hat-trick in the Bundesliga off the bench since Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland in 2020.
Alex Grimaldo (9 goals) and Jeremy Frimpong (8 goals) also scored important goals, with Alonso also receiving praise for his coaching style.
The 42-year-old Spaniard, who won the Bundesliga three times with Bayern Munich and won the Champions League with Real Madrid as a player, has been linked with former club Liverpool and Bayern, who are looking to appoint a new manager in the summer. There are rumors of a relationship.
However, Alonso chose to remain in Leverkusen He is loved by his supporters.
Minutes after his team was declared champions, “Eviva España” was played in his honor over the BayArena speakers.
“Leverkusen always had problems with him going missing during games and suffocating when it really mattered,” added Keppel. “But they added some experienced players to the team, which gave them a little bit of an edge.”
