Orlando Pirates coach Jose Ribeiro has made his intentions clear for the second half of the season. His team needs consistent wins. After a below-average start to the season, the Buccaneers are determined to improve and regain qualification for the CAF Champions League.
Their recent 6-0 win over Crystal Lake in the Nedbank Cup gives them hope, but they need to transfer that momentum into their DStv Premiership campaign. Pirates currently sit in fifth place, 13 points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, and are in desperate need of picking up points.
Ribeiro wants to see Pirates' winning spirit
“We can't afford to drop points,” Ribeiro said. “I want to at least finish second so that I can play continental football next season.”
The Pirates coach will be aiming to repeat his side's strong finish last season, when they secured second place and won the Nedbank Cup. Key to their success will be improved consistency, a challenge that will be put to the test on Saturday against Polokwane City.
Resilience – on and off the pitch
Despite a rocky start to the season, the Pirates have consistently shown resilience and the ability to bounce back. The club's internal documentary provides insight into the team's strong bonds as players support each other through personal tragedies.
Riveiro emphasizes this sense of brotherhood, saying, “We are not friends, but we are brothers. That is stronger.”

This cohesiveness was evident when they played one-man down against Sundowns. Now, Pirates must maintain this momentum as they face a tough March schedule, including games against Cape Town Spurs, Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhuhune United, as well as Nedbank Cup fixtures.
Squad Depth Is Key to Pirates' Success
The club's depth will be crucial in the coming months and Ribeiro was pleased to see fringe players like Talente Mbata getting their chance.
With focused determination and continuous improvement, Orlando Pirates have the potential to turn their season around and reclaim their spot as the continent's strongest team.
