The City of Cape Town has proposed investing R5.5 million into the JobsConnect job placement platform.
The allocation will be part of the city's proposed “Build for Jobs” budget for fiscal year 2024-25, which Mayor Jordyn Hill-Lewis presented last month.
The proposed budget, which is still open for public comment, reflects the city's key policy decisions and priorities, determines rate increases and shows where funds will be spent on programs and services.
To date, more than 100,000 Capetonians have registered on the JobsConnect platform, the statement said.
“Jobs Connect provides Capetonian residents with the opportunity to find work and training opportunities in high-growth sectors such as call centres, hospitality, manufacturing and retail. Importantly, these sectors are especially important for those looking to earn a living. It means there is a low barrier to entry for young people who want to experience the power of change for the first time,” says Hill-Lewis.
“The Jobs Connect platform is just one of the many ways the city is working to ensure that Cape Town maintains the lowest widespread unemployment rate of all South African cities, with the current 363,000 new jobs have been created in our metro since the start of the local government's term.”
Launched in 2021, the Workforce Platform provides an easy-to-use and accessible way to connect job seekers and employers.
Developed in partnership with Leelyn Management, Jobs Connect connects businesses, especially small and medium-sized businesses and corporations, with the right talent and provides job readiness training opportunities for job seekers in the city.
The platform can be accessed via mobile phone or desktop and is data-free for MTN and Vodacom users.
Users will create an online profile that will serve as a digital resume, according to the city. You will then complete a digital numeracy and literacy assessment. Both resume and assessment certificate are available for download.
“Once registered and assessed, people can see what training and learning opportunities are available through the platform. Job seekers can also drill down into opportunities by area. Interviews Individuals selected will be automatically notified via SMS or WhatsApp.”
Councilor James Voss, a member of the city's Mayoral Committee on Economic Opportunities, added: “Research shows that searching for a job can be time-consuming and stressful, and can cost job seekers up to R1,500 a month.” Jobs Connect is streamlined, user-friendly and We eliminate many of these problems by providing a cost-effective online system.
“More than 100,000 Capetonians have registered on the platform, with encouraging results for both job seekers and employers.”
