Devin Charlton of the Bahamas broke the 60m hurdles world record of 7.67, which he shared with American Tia Jones, to 7.65* and won his first world title at the event. World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24.
After qualifying in just 7th place in the morning heat with a time of 7.93 seconds, Charlton, who spoke of the need to “fix my start”, was able to pull off a spectacular run and claim the title for the first time in two years. He dodged and finished, so he wasn't under any serious threat. At Kylena Samba Mayela in Belgrade.
Samba-Mayela won the silver medal in 7.74 seconds, and Poland's Pia Szkrzyszowska was elated to win the bronze medal in 7.79 seconds.
“This means a lot to me because I set a goal for myself,” Charlton said. “I haven't changed my technique too much, just a few adjustments, but I've been working hard off the course, making sure my mental health is good and working with a sports psychologist.
“I just have to take care of myself. Indoor is also a great fit for my skill set.”
Masai Russell of the United States was fourth with a score of 7.81, and fifth was Sarah Lavin of Ireland, who twice matched her personal best of 7.90 in the heats and semifinals with a score of 7.91.
Unlike the men's 60m hurdles, which was essentially a contest of how fast Grant Holloway would run and who would chase him home, this event was more open after Charlton's quiet opening effort. It looked like.
However, her semi-final victory in 7.72 seconds proved that the task of “fixing the start” had been accomplished, as she smartly escaped from the blocks and was never seriously threatened. Skrzysowska took second place with a time of 7.78 seconds, matching her personal best.
Samba Mayela's victory in the next heat proved that this title was not to be easily conceded, as she won with a national record score of 7.73 after a great start.
But when it came to the finals, she had no answer to the power and accuracy of her Bahamian rival.
In the last semi-final, misfortune befell one of the main candidates. Two-time European Indoor Champion Nadine Visser of the Netherlands crashed into her first hurdle and she never recovered.
