Noah Lyles, aiming for his first world title in the men's indoor 60m track and field event, missed out on victory by three-hundredths of a second.
Lyles' teammate, American Christian Coleman, won the gold medal Friday at the World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, setting the world's fastest time of 6.41 seconds.
Coleman's win was a small relief. He lost to Lyles at the U.S. Indoor Championships last month.
Coleman, who set the indoor 60m world record in 2018 with a time of 6.34, led throughout the short sprint. The 27-year-old American quickly jumped out of the blocks and maintained the lead against the rapidly charging Lyles, known for his acceleration and closing speed.
Lyles took second place with a time of 6.44. Jamacia's Hakeem Blake placed third with a score of 6.46.
Lyles becomes the first sprinter to win a series of world titles in the 60m, 100m and 200m since Jamaica's Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce won gold in all three events 10 years ago. He was fighting to become what he was. Lyles won the 100 and 200 meters and was part of the U.S. team that won gold in the 4×100 meter relay at the 2023 World Championships in Track and Field.
Lyles and Coleman are expected to compete as part of the powerful U.S. track and field team at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Ryan Crozer sets winning record
World record holder Ryan Crozer won the indoor shot put on Friday. Krauser threw a championship-record 74 feet, 8.5 inches at the event, winning his first-ever world indoor title. He won the event by more than two feet.
Krauser won gold medals in the men's shot put at the past two Olympics. He is the favorite to win another gold medal in the men's shot put at the Paris Olympics.
