Political analyst Professor Sipho Seepu says the only way forward for the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng is to form a coalition government.
As vote counting continues in the province, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is closing in on the ANC.
The province has received more than 75% of the votes, with the ANC leading the way so far with 35.54% of the votes, followed by the DA with 27.55% and the EFF with 12.28%.
Professor Seep says it is highly unlikely that the ANC will win a majority of votes in Gauteng.
“Well, there are already signs that they are going to lose their majority. Even looking at the vote count at the moment, it's hovering around 33% and it will take a significant increase to get close to 51%. So what we should expect is the ANC may go into coalition government because many parties have also said they will go into coalition government with the party that gets the most votes to respect the will of the people.”
As the Election Commission continues to tally the vote results, political parties are keeping a close eye on the Election Commission's dashboard.
ANC deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane said he was surprised by the performance of the recently formed Umkhonto we Sizwe party but was confident the ANC would win when the city elections results were in.
Mokonyane said he was happy with his party's performance.
“From the results that have been audited and released to the public, we believe we have surpassed four million votes. This means we are 36% ahead of our direct rival the ANC's projection of 2.1 million votes. The number of votes we are getting from urban and metropolitan areas gives us hope that our tally can go up even further.”
