UK culture secretary Lucy Fraser has called on sports bodies to “take a clear stand” and ban transgender athletes from competing in elite women's sport.
Mr Fraser met this week with sporting bodies including the Football Association (FA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to discuss the topic.
She said the body has a “duty” to women.
“Today it is clear that some sports authorities are not going far enough and fast enough,” she said. I'm writing it in an email.
Furthermore, “Sports organizations have an obligation to provide clear guidelines and take a clear stance toward women in sports.
“By protecting the women's category, we can keep women's competitive sports safe and fair and encourage young girls who dream of one day becoming elite sportswomen.
“We have to get back to giving women a level playing field. We have to give women opportunities in sports.”
Mr Fraser referred to the Cass Review, published last week, which found children were being let down by a lack of research and “remarkably weak” evidence on medical interventions for gender care.
“Among the many lessons, Cass review, “This shows that inaction is not an option in the face of challenges,” she added.
Fraser highlighted that “individual sports such as cycling and swimming are both making positive progress” in this area.
“By introducing an 'open' category to allow transgender athletes to compete against athletes with a male birth gender, the 'female' category will remain only for athletes with a female birth gender.” she stated.
“Everyone can participate and no one can take an unfair advantage.”
