De Mtuda, real name Mthuseli Gift Khoza, has been excluded from performing at the 2024 South African Music Awards.
After many rehearsals, the producers were unable to attend the awards ceremony due to a major production error.
The musician's team issued a statement saying, “SAMA has botched the performance of De Mutuda's new summer anthem 'Diwa Kae'.”
According to a report from Jimoja, De Mutuda was invited to perform at the event by RiSA and Sjula D Productions, who work behind the scenes.
“He has agreed to perform his latest work, which features a star-studded line-up including Kabza de Small, Young Stunna, Mackenzie, MK's and Mthunzi. SAMA performs the song in public It would have been my first time doing that,” manager Thabiso Kati said.
“In the end, he was told by the production company to wait in his car and come pick him up when it was time, as there was no waiting area for artists. Shockingly, the producers… has omitted De Mutuda completely and proceeded to film the performance with only the featured artists,” Kati added.
“How do you package a performance without De Mutuda on stage?” asked Thabiso.
The production company has apologized to the music producer, and he and his team are working to resolve the incident.
This incident raises serious concerns about the organization and professionalism of the SAMA Awards production. “Mr de Mutuda and his team are considering all available options to deal with this unacceptable situation,” he concluded. As of the publication of this article, SAMA has not responded to our questions.
