Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Buvuma has given his candid views on the club's relationship with suspended star Itumeleng Khune. Although Kuhne's absence will be felt on the field, his influence and leadership remains essential to Buvuma's development.
Kuhne: The Uncertain Path of a Legend
Khune's glittering career with Kaizer Chiefs, which spanned nearly 20 years, hit a roadblock when he was suspended for misconduct. The 37-year-old's indiscretion led to him being stripped of his captaincy and subsequently forced to leave the first team.
This event promoted Buvuma to a starting role, a position he accepted with determination.
Kuhne's lasting impact on Chiefs' goalie
The 2023/24 season began with uncertainty surrounding the goalkeeper position. Initially, Brandon Petersen was retained as the starter, while Kuhne was relegated to the bench. But Petersen's inconsistency led to Kuhne's return. However, the disciplinary episode changed the dynamics once again, paving the way for Buvuma to step into the spotlight.
“he [Khune] He is a legend at the club and a legend in South African football. This is someone we all looked up to growing up, especially goalkeepers,” Buvuma revealed.
“I have learned a lot from him and no matter what happens, he is someone very close to me. We talk a lot and he helps me play and perform for the team. I'm happy about that. Do I miss him? Of course I do.”
The future: What lies ahead for Chiefs goalies?
Buvuma and Pietersen's recent contract extensions demonstrate their long-term commitment to Amakhosi and could solidify their roles. Mr. Kuhne's path is less certain.
His contract expires at the end of the season, leaving his future playing uncertain. However, there is speculation that if Kuhne retires, Chiefs management will leverage his extensive experience and legendary status to offer him a move into a coaching or ambassador role.
