Dondo Mogadjan, former National Treasury Director and Chairman of the Board of the Public Employees' Pension Fund, has resigned from all professional roles and board positions following “baseless and malicious” allegations by a convicted criminal. .
Mr Mogajane, who was also CEO of Moti Group, said he would take a sabbatical to focus on his personal well-being and spend time with his family.
In July this year, he was indicted on charges of bribery by Chiphiwa Matozi, former chairman of the now-defunct VBS Sogo Bank.
Matoszi is serving a 15-year prison sentence for being the “mastermind” of money laundering, corruption, theft and fraud at the bank, which led to its collapse in 2018 and losses of around R2 billion.
His affidavit was leaked after he reached a plea deal with the national prosecutor's office. In it, he alleged that several politicians and officials, including Mogajane, accepted R1 million in bribes to avoid pressuring local authorities to divest illegal investments from the bank.
Mogadjan vehemently denied the charges when his affidavit was leaked, insisting that he had served the Treasury with “excellence, integrity, loyalty and humility.”
In a statement released on Monday, Mogajane said he was confident his reputation would be restored.
“I believe in the importance of due process and remain confident that in time the truth will prevail,” he said.
He used the sabbatical to reflect on his career and write a memoir detailing his experiences as a public servant.
“Although this chapter of my career is coming to an end, this is not the conclusion of my story. This period marks a pause rather than an end point. At a later stage, maybe in the private sector or even in politics. I may decide to re-enter,” he said.
