The Huguenot tunnel was closed in both directions Wednesday afternoon as firefighters battled a blaze nearby.
Cape Winelands Regional Municipality spokeswoman Jo-Ann Otto said the fire started near the Du Kloof Lodge on the Du Toitskloof Pass on National Highway 1.
He said three municipal fire engines, two contract ground teams and three helicopters were on the scene, with two more fire engines on the way.
“Fire authorities are asking motorists not to stop to take photos. This is not only dangerous for fire engines, but also disrupts traffic flow. The N1 is currently passable, but due to smoke It may be closed if visibility is poor.”
On Wednesday morning, the municipality had warned of extremely high temperatures and had issued a Red Fire Index warning for the Cape Winelands and surrounding areas.
The SA Bureau of Meteorology announced that temperatures are predicted to exceed 40 degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours.
