The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have written to the African National Congress (ANC) in talks to form the seventh government, expressing their intention to work with the party.
However, the EFF's proposal is conditional on the exclusion of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Freedom Front Plus (FF+).
This was revealed in a letter written by EFF secretary-general Marshall Dlamini to ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula.
The EFF believes there is still scope for the ANC and EFF to come together and govern jointly, based on their election manifestos.
In this lengthy letter, the EFF proposes a new agreement or statement of intent between the EFF and the ANC in place of the ANC statement of intent agreed to by the GNU partners.
This new agreement must include, inter alia, the principles of compensation and equality.
The EFF added that it is open to joining any executive, so long as it does not include the DA and FF Plus.
The party also supports the principle that the president and prime minister have the power to determine the composition of the executive branch in consultation with the EFF leadership.
However, the party thought it was important to express its desire to be represented at all levels of national government, both as ministers and MPs and in parliamentary roles.
The letter comes as consultations are ongoing and the announcement of the next executive branch by President Cyril Ramaphosa is imminent.
