Kenyan comedian and influencer Elsa Majimbo has sparked controversy by speaking out about the black tax, a common practice in Africa.
The international star expressed his opinion in a video that was shared on TikTok and went viral.
Elsa said that people who depend on other family members to survive are lazy.
The star shared her experience of being annoyed with her father sending money to a relative.
She said what upsets her most is that the women in her family who used to ask her father for money have now started asking her (the comedian) for money instead.
Elsa Majimbo said such people should starve if they cannot work to feed themselves and survive.
“Sending money back home to relatives is a very common practice in Africa so I absolutely don't want to,” she said.
Social media users were divided on the comments, with some supporting Elsa's opinion and others disagreeing.
“She made it clear she doesn't know any of the relatives so it would definitely be weird if any of them tried to ask her for money now,” wrote a Twitter user.
“She should park her car well. What's the use of so called wealth if her family can't use it,” wrote another user.
“She is speaking from a position of privilege, her relatives are not that close to her personally. If she lived in Nigeria she would understand it's not necessarily a matter of laziness. On the plus side, she wouldn't have an issue with black taxes,” one user wrote.
