Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral explained the difference between Amakhossi and Mamelodi Sundowns in terms of management.
The 64-year-old coach is no stranger to Amakhossi, having previously served as head coach during the 1999/2000 season.
In his first stint at Naturena, Ertugral left with several trophies, including the BP Top 8 Cup, the Coca-Cola Cup and the Mandela Cup (now known as the CAF Confederation Cup).
Ertugral believes Sundowns have been successful behind the scenes while Chiefs have underperformed.
“The biggest problem is that your biggest enemy to yourself is always the illusion of knowledge. So if you think you know it, it's an illusion and it's your enemy.” Ertugral told Radio 2000.
“After all, you may not know that today's football is changing day by day, but when I myself went to the Turkish national team, it was also for me to adapt to the situation that was happening.
“I can see it.” [Mamelodi] Sunset, they're running away with South African football, and [competing] Internationally as well – behind the scenes there are people who are very influential to me. I can't speak for Mr. [Flemming] Berg,” he continued.
“Behind the scenes he is already looking for [to the future]. The sporting director is not the one who polishes the results – that's the technical part, but the sporting director and the people behind the scenes are the ones who polish the results for the next 10 years.
Ertugral says Sundowns have influential players unlike Chiefs
“I don't think that's what's going on behind the scenes by Kaiser Jr. or the business people, but we need the expertise to be able to handle and continue to hone the results for the next 10 years. That's what the Chiefs are doing. It’s not happening.”
In an interview with FARPost, Muhsin revealed that he had received offers from PSL clubs but decided to head to the UAE.
Ertugral left Chiefs for the second time in 2009, winning the MTN8 title by defeating Sundowns on penalties.
