The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has announced that renowned South African fashion designer Thula Sindi is suspected of benefiting from irregular grant payments from the National Lottery Commission (NLC) in 2018. did.
This comes amid an investigation into corruption and maladministration at the NLC which has cost the organization and government more than R1 billion.Cindy was nominated along with actress Moiteli “Terry” Feto, known for her role in the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi, and Feto's sister, Dimakatso. Mr Feto had previously denied any involvement in the fraud charges.
The SIU said suspicious contracts worth R1.4 billion have been identified since the investigation began in October 2020, and investigations are underway into what the SIU believes is a large syndicate. However, three years after the investigation began, and despite large-scale seizures, authorities announced that only R3.9 million had been recovered through confiscated assets.
