The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has condemned a racist incident in which a woman was seen arguing with flight attendants on a Flysafair flight.
The incident occurred on a flight from Durban to Cape Town.
In a video circulating on social media, a woman can be heard hurling racial slurs at the flight attendant.
Western Cape police leader Tertius Simmers insists this type of behavior has no place in a democratic society.
“During the heated altercation, a passenger reportedly hurled racial slurs at members of the community of color. In the spirit of the Office of the Attorney General, which is firmly grounded in diversity and fairness for all, We stand in solidarity with the victims. Our unwavering commitment to equality drives us to fight for an inclusive society where all citizens are treated with dignity and respect.”
SABC regrets the incident
The woman is an employee of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). The company expressed concern about the virality of the video.
In a statement, the broadcaster emphasized its commitment to values of respect and integrity and expressed regret over the incident.
In the video, the staff also referred to the SABC and claimed that the incident would be broadcast on SABC News.
The broadcaster reiterated that its editorial regulations ensure that newsrooms make independent decisions about news coverage.
It added that the matter would be addressed through internal procedures.
