“Rogue One'' director Gareth Edwards is in talks to direct an all-new Universal movie “Jurassic World.'' The news comes days after negotiations between the studio and David Leitch broke down.
The film will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Entertainment. Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley will produce, with David Leitch and Kelly McCormick also producing through 87North. David Koepp, the original screenwriter of “Jurassic Park'' and “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,'' will write the script.
The currently untitled project is scheduled for release on July 2, 2025 and will mark the beginning of a new story in the decades-long dinosaur series. It's still unclear whether any of the previous stars will return, including Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum.
Cope's other screenplays include Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, Death Becomes Her, Panic Room, and War of the Worlds. He is represented by CAA and attorney David Fox of Myman, Greenspan, Feynman, Fox, Rosenberg & Wright.
The six-film series, which began with Spielberg's original Jurassic Park in June 1993, has grossed more than $6 billion worldwide. The latest film, Jurassic World Dominion, released in 2022, has surpassed $1 billion worldwide.
Edwards' latest directorial effort, “The Creator,” follows a former special forces officer (John David Washington) sent to destroy a weapon designed to destroy humanity during a decades-long war. The story is about discovering that the target is an extraterrestrial being. AI in the form of a child. The film was nominated for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects at this year's Academy Awards. Other film credits include 2010's “Monsters” and 2014's “Godzilla.” Edwards is repped by his WME and Range Media Partners.
