The African National Congress (ANC) has announced that members of the Government of National Unity (GNU) will soon host a national dialogue aimed at achieving consensus among South Africans on some of the priority areas of the seventh administration.
The ANC yesterday briefed the media after the first meeting of the National Council of Provincial Members of Parliament (NCOP), with former Mpumalanga premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tshipane elected as NCOP chairperson and Kenneth Moyemang as floor leader.
The ANC, Democratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and Patriotic Alliance (PA) form a unity government. The GNU partners have signed a letter of intent but still need to meet to finalise the details of how the government will be run.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the president would formally announce an inclusive GNU cabinet after the inauguration on Wednesday.
“The party has committed to conducting an inclusive national dialogue process with political parties, civil society, labour, business and other sectors to discuss the key challenges facing the country. The national dialogue process will seek to develop a national social compact that will enable us to achieve the overarching objectives of the National Development Plan, eradicate poverty and significantly reduce inequality by 2030,” Mbalula said.
