google on wednesday announced that its cloud data center in Johannesburg has been completed and the facility is now available to customers.
The news comes 16 months after Google announced it would join rivals Microsoft and Amazon Web Services in establishing a so-called cloud infrastructure “region” in South Africa.
“With the addition of Johannesburg, our network now has a total of 40 cloud regions and 121 zones, which together deliver Google Cloud services to more than 200 countries and territories around the world,” said Google Cloud Africa Director. said Niral Patel in a statement.
“Like all Google Cloud regions, the Johannesburg region is connected to Google's secure network of high-capacity fiber-optic cable systems on land and at sea around the world, including Portugal and Togo, Nigeria, It also includes the recently completed Equiano submarine cable system connecting Namibia, South Africa and St. Helena.”
Google announced in September 2022 that it would build cloud interconnection sites linked to Equiano in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Lagos, and Nairobi. These interconnection sites provide access to the company's data center infrastructure in South Africa.
The launch of the Johannesburg cloud region comes after rivals AWS and Microsoft both built cloud regions in South Africa. Amazon has a data center campus in Cape Town, and Microsoft operates facilities in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. Enterprise software giant Oracle is also investing in building cloud infrastructure in Japan.
